Film tools like CinePaint are resolution independent. There are no fixed limits to the resolution of an image.
- ATSC standard for 1080p HD is 1920x1080
- SMPTE standard for 35mm 2k film scans is 2048x1556
- SMPTE standard for 65mm 4k film scans is 4096x3112

To convert from an HD acquisition format such as Sony HDCAM to a film format (digital intermediate) such as DPX requires hardware. You would need a DDR with HD SDI input such as RaveHD? from SpectSoft?. That's how you get from HD tape into film tools like CinePaint and Apple Shake.
To convert from motion picture film to digital intermediate requires a scanner. When film scanning, more pixels cost more money. Don't expect a studio digital intermediate to be exactly SMPTE standard. It varies somewhat. Each studio decides at what resolution a scan looks "good enough" relative to the quality of a particular film.
